I watched this movie after being introduced by my housemate from Singapore. It took a little persuasion for me to actually watch a Jim Carrey movie as I am not a huge fan of his. But since it was "highly recommended", I decided to give it a go.....and I was pleasantly surprised.
This is a very short synopsis of the movie, found at IMDb:
A couple undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.
Yeah, it's like a synopsis of a synopsis...but believe me, this is all you need to know. If you read more, it would definitely spoil your viewing experience. If you generally don't enjoy "You jump, I jump" romantic movies, don't worry...This movie is anything but.
What I liked about the movie:
1. The acting by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. Jim is known to be a comedian - this movie is NOT a comedy. Kate is known for her elegance - this movie shows the side of her that is quirky and relaxed. Here's proof that both actors have the versatility that many others in their field lack...very refreshing!
2. Though it was classified as Romance, this movie was brilliantly editted that you will think you are watching a psychological thriller. I was glued to the screen and my attention went on overdrive as I was trying to grasp the storyline. Not that the storyline itself was complicated, it was the arrangement of the scenes that may seem confusing. A little like reading The Time Traveller's Wife!
3. The theme of the movie was simple and yet so painfully true. "Only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with". Don't we all need this reminder from time to time?
4. Very original. So very touching too.
What I disliked:
1. I do not like the idea that human should be given the option to forget. Emotionally driven creatures that we are, choosing to forget or erasing bad memories will change who we are as a person. The learning process occur most when we fail or face challenges. And I'm pretty sure, these are the stuff that people would like to erase given the chance. No, God did not put us here so that we can have a choice.
2. I was left with a slight headache after the intense movie-watching. Several times I had to playback and pause - very irritating since it made me feel dumb :)
This is one of those movies that should be seen more than once.

Something Borrowed
A good friend and I went out for a movie last week and decided on a chick flick "Something Borrowed".
Here's a synopsis of the movie, thanks to IMDb:
Rachel is a lawyer. When she was in law school she fell for another student Dex who comes from an affluent family. But she could never say anything. When Dex meets her best friend Darcy who treats her like dirt sometimes, who was visiting her, they start dating. Eventually they get engaged and Darcy asks Rachel to be her Maid of Honor. But Rachel stills has feelings for Dex and still can't say anything. But now Dex is starting to feel something for Rachel and is not sure what to do.
What I liked:
1. I really liked Ginnifer Goodwin's performance in this movie. She is very cute and likeable. I think this gal could be the next big thing. Look out!
2. Light-hearted storyline and happy ever after ending. This is why I enjoy chick flicks! The movie is so easy to follow, good humour here and there, and the ending is never a surprise.
3. So many cute.....dresses and fashion ideas! Short dresses, accessories, shoes!! Personally, these are way better than what they had on Sex and the City. Why? We can easily copy the look anytime, anywhere. There was no outrageous headgear in Something Borrowed.
4. Colin Egglesfield who portrayed Dex is smouldering! He did look like young Tom Cruise from some angles...but nahhh! He is HOTTER! Need I say more?
What I didn't like:
1. The hot Dex could not make up his mind - that was annoying and cowardice. But without this imperfection, there won't be a story to tell, would there?
2. Nothing else....I actually liked this movie :P
I do think this is a fine, fine movie to be enjoyed in the company of other gal pals.

Tuna & Apple Diet
I was in the gym today when I realized my sister's wedding is in a week! Me being me, I just realized this TODAY, which means I have 7 days to lose 2kg in order to fit into that perfect dress I have chosen.
Rather suddenly, I decided that I will go on tuna and apple diet. This is rather out there, but it's only for 7 days and it is gonna be worth the try. Christian Bale lived on a can of tuna and an apple a day and successfully lost 60 pounds while filming The Machinist. Of course, I have no idea how long it took him to lose that amount, but I only wanna lose 2kg...So shouldn't be a problem right?
It would be tough the first 2 days...that I foresee. But, no pain no gain! Check back in a week's time, will let you know if I succeeded!

Two Must See Movies in 2011
I don't know about you, but for me, I must watch X-Men: First Class (opening in June in US) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Opening in July)...
I am hoping X-Men continues its grand tradition of superb casting and storyline (hard-core comic readers, please don't spit on me). I thoroughly enjoyed watching the X-men trilogy & Wolverine although I have never read a single of its comic book. It delights me to know that the are many many more X-Men movies in production as we speak! Here's a synopsis courtesy of movieinsider.com:
"The film, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men".
What should be interesting is to see Transformers coming back from the dead after the disastrous Revenge of the Fallen...and now without Megan Fox, let's see who is/are the new eye candy/ies. Here is a synopsis courtesy of movieinsider.com:

Running Tips
Read today that if you are training for a run, one formula you can use is to multiply by 2 the distance for the competition you are taking part in, and that's the total distance you need to train in a week.
As an example, if you plan to take part in a half marathon (21 km), you need to hit at least 21km x 2 = 42 km/ week.
I found this tip interesting!

Walking and the Calories Burnt
Walking is a slow and gradual activity that burns fat effectively by increasing metabolic rates even while at rest. Imagine: After walking, while you enjoy a good show on tv, you are still burning fat!
Walking is known to strengthen the muscles at your buttocks, calves, thighs and hips. It gives you a body that people are paying thousands of ringgits for at slimming centres.
Here's a surprise: Slow walking burns more calories than fast walking because you lose momentum with every new step you take. With brisk walking, more calories are burnt by swinging your arms. The beauty of it all: the more you weigh, the more calories you burn per step. Wow!
OK, let's see some numbers (Average calories burnt):
30 minutes of walking = 107 calories
45 minutes of walking = 160 calories
60 minutes of walking = 200 calories
60 minutes of brisk walking = 340 calories
60 minutes of stair-walking = 600 calories

The Ugly Truth
I just watched the movie The Ugly Truth, starring Katherine Heigl & Gerard Butler, released in 2009. It is another "feel good movie" with a "predictable ending". Here is a synopsis, taken from rottentomatoes.com:
Abby Richter is a romantically challenged morning show producer whose search for Mr. Perfect has left her hopelessly single. She's in for a rude awakening when her bosses team her with Mike Chadway, a hardcore TV personality who promises to spill the ugly truth on what makes men and women tick.
Two actors I really enjoy watching...I love Katherine Heigl from Grey's Anatomy (obviously) and Gerard Butler from 300 (duh!). The comedy and chemistry between the two are believable.
What I liked:
1. Good looking cast with swoon-worthy bods - especially Eric Winter who plays Colin.
2. Happy ending - I don't like bad endings in a movie, I want to believe that everything has a happy ending.
3. Simple, non-complicated script - I like movies where I don't have to think much. Since movies are generally 1.5 hours long, I would like it in a way so my brain is on autopilot for most of the ride; after all it is supposed to be 'entertainment'
What I didn't like:
1. The movie was overly predictable - self-explanatory.
2. The dude was not as macho as his exterior - for a guy who talked so much trash about women, he sure fall easy. She didn't have to do anything to win him over! If only life was that way!
3. Lack of punch in the script - Though I like simplicity in the overall script, The Ugly Truth did not pack any punch, unlike something like Marley & Me.
Just my two cents worth!
